About Davenne Essif
I am a certified Hypnobabies® Childbirth Hypnosis instructor (HCHI) and have completed childbirth instructor training with the International Childbirth Education Association (ICEA), H.U.G. Your Baby®, and Calm Birth®. I am currently working on training with the ICEA doula training program.
I began to research the topic of motherhood for my Ph.D. in art history. Though I was focused on French visual culture between 1910 and 1940, I found myself also reading contemporary sources on the topic of motherhood. During my pregnancy and at the birth of my daughter (June 2017), this "extraneous" research served me well. And yet I still felt I could have benefited from more resources and friendly faces to help me navigate the complicated transition to motherhood.
By the time I finished my doctorate in the fall of 2018, I knew that I wanted to dedicate my career to supporting women as they made the momentous and very personal journey into motherhood and beyond. This passion has led me to a career as a childbirth educator and doula. In this new pursuit, my experience as an art historian is not lost or forgotten. My years of teaching experience at UNC inform my current classes and help me to strategically plan and refine each series to best suit students' needs and interests. The research skills I acquired during my years of dissertation work, honed my ability to always stay current with the latest, evidence-based information on pregnancy, birth, and beyond.
As a teacher and avid learner, I feel everyone has the right to access and gather as much information as they would like. At the same time, it is important not to overload ourselves with details that do not serve us. My classes therefore mix important information on pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period with opportunities to explore self-care and build new friendships with fellow parents-to-be.
